Natural Helpers

Saint Mary School has had the Natural Helpers program for 7 years.  Our program is made up of 6th, 7th & 8th grade students who are trained to be peer helpers under the advisement of Miss Orlando and Mrs. Huyser.  Once nominated and accepted into the program, the students attend an intensive, sleepover retreat training for two days.  This retreat training for our newest members was held on October 21-22 at Camp Rell National Guard Base in Niantic, Connecticut.  Along with Saint Mary’s 6th graders were students from Harborside Middle School and Jonathan Law High School.

Instrumental Music Program

This program, administered throughout the Archdiocese of Hartford by FUTURE MUSICIANS, INC. (FMI), allows students in grades 4-8 the opportunity to receive a group lesson once per week in any of the brass, woodwind or percussion instruments. The scheduling of these lessons is rotated each week so a student never misses the same class more than one time per month.

Students who register become part of either the BEGINNING BAND (which practices once per week during school hours) or ADVANCED BAND (which practices once per week after school). Besides our school bands, the bands of local Catholic schools are often combined and more advanced students are afforded the opportunity to perform with regional and statewide "All Star" bands.

The fee and registration for this program is administered through FMI. Interested parents will be invited to a special informational evening meeting early in the year.

Drama Club

For anyone interested in joining the drama club next year, please watch for sign up flyers that are distributed the first week of January. The club is on a first come first served basis, so get your forms in to the front office quickly if you'd like to take part. Any specific questions can be addressed to the director, Lisa Lelas.

Ski Club

The Saint Mary Ski Club is for skiers ONLY; we will not be participating in snowboarding activities. The ski club is open to students in grades 4 - 8. Please consider the ski club whether you are an experienced skier or have never skied before. Lessons are available for the beginner as well as for a refresher course. The club will meet periodically throughout the year and will ski for five weeks at Powder Ridge Ski Area in Middlefield, CT.
